This activity essentially simulates a management meeting – but with a difference.
Each group of four prepares for a meeting. Members of the group have individual briefs to set the scene and provide a list of issues they need to get across, plus 10 counters. They cannot speak at the meeting unless they place one of their counters in a central pot. They then have the floor, and can speak - uninterrupted - until another person stops them by putting one of their counters in the pot.
At the end of the meeting everyone receives a list of questions about what other people were saying at the meeting – and guess what? No-one was listening!! Eye contact goes, focus is lost, thoughts stray and attitudes and emotions get in the way!
Participants realise how little they know of what others said and how much they misunderstood. Clearly demonstrates how poor most people are at listening. We have good intentions but we are also easily distracted - being an ACTIVE listener needs practice!
Having some participants as 'Observers' is optional but they have an important role in recording the ebb and flow of the meeting on a simple chart - they provide useful data and comment for the debrief.
