Teams are based in historic Villeburg which does not have a pizza takeaway. They bid for one of four sites and then attempt to run their business over six ‘quarters’. It is fully interactive so teams can (and do!) steal sales from one another.
They need to identify their target market and go after it. One team is in the ‘posh’ part of town, another in the student area and two are in the tourist belt. Decisions come thick and fast on whether to have motorcycle delivery, whether to expand, to diversify and how to deal with the health scare. Great fun and lots to observe in how the teams reach decisions and deal with setbacks!
This activity now comes with short introductory and debrief videos. Play the Introductory video (lasting approx 5 mins) at the start to brief delegates on their task and then after the game, play the Debrief video (lasting approx 7.5 mins) and when that is over, carry on with your own observations of how the activity went. Or simply use them to brief yourself on how to introduce and debrief the activity with confidence.
This activity now includes a virtual version, in addition to the physical activity for face-to-face training.
Trainer’s Notes contain full guidance and debrief notes.
This activity is supplied as a hard copy pack for face-to-face classroom use and as a set of digital files for virtual classroom use (the digital files are supplied via the Northgate Trainerhub).

We ran 'Going for Profit!' at a conference and it went down a storm! We had extremely positive feedback from everyone involved and we're now planning to run it with other departments so many thanks indeed - a great product!
Colin Guest, Senior Business Architect, Lloyds Banking Group
'Going for Profit!' went very well with apprentices from the Skills Funding Agency - they loved the teamwork and the opportunity to be competitive. They also realised how difficult it was to run a real business and how you need to work as a team.
Justin Smith-Essex, Group Managing Director, Ted Learning Limited
At such a reasonable cost 'Going for Profit!' is one of the most effective, value-for-money training tools I have come across. I was immediately attracted by the simplicity of the rules and ease of actually running the exercise. It sounded like fun and people do learn more when they enjoy something. As a trainer, it gave me problems – the range and amount of learning points! I wish I had those problems with every training activity.
J. Roberts, Black & Decker
I’ve found 'Going For Profit!' quite remarkable. The exercise drives home the fact that, given the same information and the same opportunity, the quality of decisions and decision-making is determined not just by managerial status; more by clear thinking and good leadership. The model is just right in terms of complexity. It’s demanding but not de-motivating. And above all, it’s fun.
B. Cowley, Cowley Consultants
'Going for Profit!' made potentially dull subject matter - profit & loss - fun and competitive.
C. Smith, Carphone Warehouse
Fantastic! I can’t wait for the next opportunity to run 'Going for Profit!'.
Clare Phizacklea, HR Director, Busy Bees Group at St Matthews
Just a quick note to say that I ran 'Going for Profit!' for the first time last week and it was a great success from both my point of view as the training provider and deliverer and the delegates whose feedback was excellent. So thanks very much for the chance to talk and discuss the various options and also for a great product.
Andrew Parsons, People Development Consultant
'Going for Profit!' is helping us understand the effects of business/commercial decision making, and I am interested in purchasing some more copies please.
Karen Hill, Capability & Development Manager, IMI plc
We ran 'Going for Profit!' virtually and it ran really well for us and all participants really enjoyed it.
Gemma Barns, Graduate Resourcing & Development Manager, White & Case
We ran 'Going for Profit' once virtually and it was a success. We used Zoom and Miro to run the activity. We put the teams into Zoom breakout rooms for deliberation and used Miro (a virtual whiteboard) as a timer and information board (where I put instructions and announcements). I could jump into the zoom rooms to obtain team answers and I shared results via email. It worked out really well in the end. We'll use it again in a virtual setting in a few months and I expect the results to be similarly great.
Songya Kesler, Leadership Consultant & Coach, Emerging Leaders Training GmbH
I used 'Going for Profit!' in one of my training sessions and it went wonderfully! The program was easy to use and the grads we did the session with said they really enjoyed the game. I plan to use it again very soon!
Camille Charles, Development & Resourcing Coordinator, IMI plc
We ran 'Going for Profit!' in a face-to-face session last week, using the trainerhub software. It went smoothly and the participants had fun!
Songya Kesler, Leadership Consultant & Coach, Emerging Leaders Training
We have run ‘Going for Profit!’ a couple of times now, once with a bunch of finance people who absolutely loved it and once with a group of non-finance people on a development programme who also really enjoyed it and took a lot of learning from it. As the rounds progress so does the complexity of the decisions that need to be made. This keeps it interesting and keeps giving them something additional to consider. The quality of the handouts included in the pack really elevates the game to another level as well, adding to the overall professional feel of it all. Pretty straightforward to facilitate as well for a non-financial person.
