What is Psychological Safety and why is it important?
It’s all about being in a ‘safe’ environment where you can express yourself fully, confident that colleagues and managers will listen respectfully.
Unfortunately, many people inhabit ‘unsafe’ environments that:
- stifle innovation (people are afraid to be creative)
- hinder problem-solving (people are afraid to speak up)
- create low morale (people don’t feel valued)
- create low team performance (people aren’t listened to)
- encourage antagonism (people don’t feel part of a great team)
Northgate’s Psychological Safety explores these issues.
How does it work?
Teams are thrown into an ‘unsafe’ environment to see how THAT feels. How does it feel?
Answer: NOT GOOD!!
Then after reflection on their own real-life experiences of not being valued or not feeling able to admit to mistakes, they have an opportunity to experience a ‘safe’ environment and how THAT feels? How does it feel?
Answer: TERRIFIC!!
The benefits psychological safety are:
- happier colleagues
- boosts to morale, wellbeing and mental health
- higher productivity all round
- greater innovation and creativity
- better internal (and external) relationships
- mutual respect
