Ideally suited to:
Introduce or round off any training session, for team bonding and to unleash some energy & fun!
In this fun and energising quiz, each team is given a buzzer. Each buzzer has a different colour and sound meaning each team can be identified.
Three different quizzes are included. All consist of 30 questions. The questions are generally short, quick-response questions. However, they require some thought. The first two quizzes follow a conventional, open-question format; the third is a True/False quiz.
Scoring is simple: the first team to buzz in with a correct answer gets ONE POINT. For an incorrect answer they get MINUS 2 points, and the question is then open to the other teams, to buzz in, and be scored in the same way. With the True/False quiz, of course, there will only be one opportunity for teams to buzz in. All point scores are recorded on the Trainer's Record.
Each set of quiz questions is supplied as both a PowerPoint and a PDF file, to display on a shared screen for all delegates to see. The Trainer has control and explains to teams that one-by-one, 30 questions will appear. You can of course reduce the number of questions if you wish. The Trainer reads out the question, after which, and not before, teams can buzz in with an answer. In practice, teams need a moment or two to think and discuss, but explain that if anyone buzzes prematurely they will receive MINUS 10 points!
At the end, scores are totalled and the winning team announced.
- Beforehand, familiarise yourself with the quiz questions and read through the (short) Trainer's Notes where you will find all the questions and answers (and explanations where necessary). Test the buzzers.
- At the start of a session, set up the PowerPoint with the first slide showing on a shared screen. Organise the group into teams, each at a separate table.
- Briefly introduce the activity and explain the scoring. You will show the questions one at a time and read them out (read them direct from the screen or from the Trainer's Notes).
- It is important that teams are not 'buzzer happy'! Make the point that no-one should buzz in until you have finished reading the question and remind teams that negative points can outstrip positive ones if they are not careful.
- Have a copy of the Trainer's Record to hand (download it from the Northgate Trainerhub and either print a copy or use the onscreen, editable PDF).
- Display and read out the first question. Wait for the first team to respond and record scores accordingly. Continue to the next question and so on. You may want to discuss ansers during the quiz or wait until the end.
- At the end, total the scores and announce the winner (and if you're having one - present the prize).

Scott Watson, Managing Director, Summit Training I used 'Fingers on Buzzers!' recently and it went wonderfully!I used it to explore the emotional aspects of decision-making. At first teams could score points with a correct answer, and not lose points with a wrong answer. That approach led to very quick responses. Next the teams were told they would lose two points for an incorrect answer. This approach led to much slower response and more in-group discussion before buzzing. Finally I explained that every correct answer would results in a 10 donation to their companys chosen charity and the delay in responding was palpable! So the focus went from 'get in quick' to 'don't get it wrong' and on to 'people could lose out if we get this wrong'. My focus was on the emotional intelligence aspects of decision making - including trust in making decisions individually and collectively - best case, worst case, acceptable case scenarios and the retention of good standing with a stakeholder/peer/client group, and how easily that can be lost if flawed decisions lead to dodgy communication - consequences, implications and trust. Thanks Northgate for a great tool to help explore this topic.
