Training courses on influencing, persuasion and negotiation. Use it as a stand-alone or to provide an engaging, learning-by-doing element that reinforces the theory and makes the training memorable.
At work we try to influence people all the time whether trying to get a colleague to do a job for us, negotiating with a supplier or discussing a contract. We may even want to manage our boss. Whatever the case it’s good to understand the basic techniques that will help us to get what we want more easily – and ideally with a win-win outcome. This six-unit pack explores different ways of influencing others and allows teams to practise newly-acquired skills in a fun and confidence-building environment.
In one part of this multi-unit pack teams attempt to ‘sell’ each other holidays they would not normally consider. The pack includes three videos of people trying to influence their audience. Participants decide what techniques are being used and who (of the three) is the most persuasive, and why.
- Briefly introduce the topic and address participants’ existing influencing skills: issue ‘Holiday Cards’ and instruct teams to prepare and deliver short persuasive presentations to the rest of the group. Discuss the influencing skills used (or not used!).
- Issue the 1st ‘Handout’ describing five workplace situations where influencing skills are required. Teams review and respond by suggesting appropriate ways to influence.
- Next issue the Handout ‘Influence & Persuasion’ which establishes the six main types of influence. Teams study the situations described and try to identify the particular influencing skill at play, such as using rapport, credibility, reciprocity, peer pressure etc.
- Teams then watch three short videos of presentations and critique the presenters’ performances. How influenced were they; why?
- Finally four scenarios allow teams to put all they have learned so far into practice.
- Key Points Handout included for delegates to take away.
