Northgate says...
"Mission Improbable is all about good communication. Teams that realise they need each other will do well. Teams that are unwilling to share information will fall behind and never quite recover."
- Seeing what interactions make an effective team
- Seeing the dangers in making assumptions
- Seeing the benefits of supporting other teams, and developing trust
- Seeing the need to share information freely when appropriate
- Seeing the need for a disciplined approach to communications
Ideally suited to:
Seeing how teams can work with other teams on a fairly straightforward project.
Your teams must plan a way to get 200 eggs to a given destination, in hilly terrain! Walkie-talkies link you to a second team which has a similar (but not identical) objective. At some point your team will realise that their map contains vital information that you need (and vice versa).
To encourage co-operation between teams their Brief states that it is the two teams combined score that counts. But invariably teams miss this given objective, treating each other as rival teams!
In this updated version there are extra materials making it possible to have a second pair of teams running in parallel to the first set - so enough materials for four teams in all. One pair communicate with walkie-talkies, the second pair with written notes and face-to-face meetings.
- Introduce the activity: tie it in with your wider training programme.
- Issue Team Briefs and maps.
- Set up the walkie-talkies (and a meeting place and notepaper if you have two sets of teams).
- Allow 60 minutes for teams to try and accomplish their objectives.
- Observe teams in action.
- Lead a Debrief on the issues raised and relate the learning back to how they can be usefully applied in the workplace.

Geoff Hoffheinz, Chief Engineer, Glennmont Partners Our delegates found 'Mission Improbable' challenging, but very rewarding in seeing the differences between walkie talkie communications and written communications (ie phone v email, as we put it), and how different character styles worked together (or in some cases didn’t!). Excellent game.
J
Joseph Williams, Organisational Development Manager, Nexus We used 'Mission Improbable' for a team building day for our Senior Leadership Team a couple of weeks ago. It was a great activity that led to lots of great discussion about ways of working and collaboration. I would certainly run it again.
R
Rebecca Tisdale, EMEA Operations Training Senior Specialist, Equinix I used 'Mission Improbable' in Lisbon at a global conference. It worked really well and was very well received. It was also a good reflection of how the teams work on a daily basis, as they are usually split up into different time zones.
M
Matthew Hotten, People & Organisational Development Manager, Geberit Sales Ltd 'Mission Improbable' was ace! Really engaging, really fun and a really creative way to identify the key elements of working as a team.
P
Peter Collins, Head of Training, 24Seven Group 'Mission Improbable' is one of the best training activities I've EVER used! Fun, challenging and rich for team coaching.
