Northgate says...
"Delegates love the scenario and it's not uncommon to get feedback on how seriously teams take their presentations! Plus if you use the optional Builder's Message to introduce a 'change' element, it is interesting to see how teams cope with it. Will they ignore it and continue with their current plan? Will they take account of it and do the necessary calculations, then ultimately reject it - or will they go with the new option? Decisions! Now available for use in both virtual and face-to-face classrooms, The Pyramid Game is a flexible resource for any teamwork training course!"
- To work as an efficient team
- To communicate well within the team
- To have a structure to the team objective
- To consider various options and select objectively
- To manage the time effectively
- The impact of a good presentation
Ideally suited to:
Teamwork training for supervisors, junior staff, apprentices, people new to the world of work, new managers and more!
There is some urgency as the pyramid must be completed before the elderly Pharaoh dies.
Decide whether to build a single large pyramid or two small ones, which stone quarry to use and on which site to build. At the same time you need to work out how much it will cost, stay in budget and assess how long it’s all going to take - the Pharaoh is not getting any younger. In addition, in face-to-face sessions of The Pyramid Game, a scale model is needed - so the Pharaoh sees what he’s getting for his money. In virtual sessions there is, instead, a 'Squares Problem', which if resolved correctly will give gravitas to the team's reputation. An impressive sales slogan to appeal to his emotions is needed. Finally teams make short presentations - along with all the other contenders. The cheapest quote for building, within budget and within the time frame, wins - and in the event of a tie, the sales slogan and quality of the presentation will be the deciding factors.
Plenty for teams to display their skills – and plenty to assess (Observer’s Forms supplied). This is a timeless Northgate activity aimed at improving teamwork, very popular, and excellent value.
- Divide participants into groups.
- Explain how the activity works.
- Issue Briefing Materials.
- If possible, allocate an observer to each group.
- When time is up, listen to the presentations and assess their proposal and their performance.
- Lead a Debrief on team performance and lessons learned.
- Allow observers to give feedback and announce the winner.

Nick Taylor, Learning & Development Specialist, Bath & North East Somerset Council I used 'The Pyramid Game' with five different groups, all of whom were at different levels. It worked well on ALL levels - everybody engaged and there were some good learning outcomes from the exercise.
J
John Goode, Kerobi Performance Management Ltd I used 'The Pyramid Game' during a teambuilding exercise on an induction course. The best learning points included delegation, presentation, and options (for solution). The learning points will stay in the mind long after the course – just the ticket!
F
Florencio Jr Padilla, Managing Director, Perky People I have used lots of Northgate activities, including 'The Escape Room', 'Eldorado!', 'Emotional Intelligence', 'The Pyramid Game', and 'Time Trial!'. Northgate activities are challenging, which encourage people to communicate more and work together in solving problems.
J
John Cropper, Co-Founder, Pyramid Learning 'The Pyramid Game' always goes really well. Northgate activities are great because they deliver effective learning outcomes and they are easy to facilitate. But above all, they are engaging and fun!
P
P. Attwood, Thomas Cook We use 'The Pyramid Game' at small conferences and find it opens up all sorts of training points for discussion. There is a lot to be gained in terms of teams identifying their strengths and weaknesses and allocating duties to make the most of their individual skills.
