Ideally suited to:
Courses on business finance for non finance people, but Trainers also choose 'Hotel' for both Leadership and Teamwork courses when looking for an engaging challenge.
There are four hotels in a Thai resort and teams first decide which one to run. Bidding too high at auction results in a bigger bank loan so teams must be cautious. Then, from the latest set of accounts they must determine how to set about improving the business.
Occupancy is key so setting the right room rate and targeting their specific market are crucial. But nothing stands still in business and with every set of annual results comes further decisions. Opportunities and threats abound. Can teams navigate their way successfully?
Failing to take advantage of what’s on offer can mean teams fall behind in the profit stakes. The team with the highest profit wins the day!
- Introduce the activity.
- Issue Team Folders.
- Allow teams to study the details of the hotels in the area and to bid for the establishment they want to run.
- Conduct the auction (program-aided).
- Issue teams with their hotel's performance results and let them make their own decisions for the future.
- Enter their decisions into the program and issue the results (Profit & Loss accounts) which include opportunities and threats facing their business. While you do this, issue teams with Crisis Card No.1.
- Hand out results to teams.
- Repeat for up to six 'rounds', each representing 'three months'.
- Lead a Debrief to discuss the learning outcomes and key lessons.

This activity is for face-to-face and virtual classroom use. The digital files are supplied via the Northgate Trainerhub.
This Northgate Training activity comes with a five-year licence for repeat use with up to 24 participants at a time, for use by Trainers based at one licence-holding site.
All Trainers physically based at the same office location can access the Northgate resources during the five-year term, including the digital resources supplied on the Trainerhub via your own site-specific Trainer Dashboard. If you have Trainers based at other locations, and/or remote workers, who would like to access and use the Northgate resources, we can advise further depending on your requirements.
